Shelby Osborne loves football. If she had been a “normal” girl, she would have tried out for cheerleading. But Shelby didn’t want to be on the sidelines of the football game. She wanted to be on the field, playing football with her school team. The problem is, Shelby’s school football team was composed exclusively of boys. If Shelby had been a “normal” girl she would have swallowed her pride, squashed her ambition, and let the boys do what boys do.
But Shelby couldn’t do that. She didn’t think it was fair that she was just as talented and athletic as the boys on the team, yet she was denied the chance to use her gifts in a real game. So Shelby fought for the right to play football with the boys. You know where this story is going, don’t you? Shelby was victorious. She didn’t let go of her ambition, not for one minute. And she won a spot on the team the same way anyone else earns a place on the team, through hard work and strong performance.
Now, as you can see from the title of this article, Shelby is the first female defensive back to play on a college football team…the real team, not an extra-curricular intramural team. Shelby is the real deal. And guess what? She IS a normal girl! It’s the rest of the world that has to change their definition of “normal”. Way to go, Shelby!
